Toms River is the county seat of Ocean County and is the 8th largest township in New Jersey. With 41 square miles of land, 12 square miles of water and 90,000 residents, Toms River is well known for presenting the second largest Halloween parade in the United States. 

 

Its historic downtown district consisting mainly of the Main Street, Washington Street and  Water Street contains the County Courthouse, its adjacent justice complex, municipal offices as well  as the county library. Several restaurants and professional offices are also there to serve the busy downtown area. The township offers its residents a typical Jersey Shore or suburban lifestyle with year round commerce and economic opportunities throughout. The majority of residential neighborhoods are located on the mainland. Silverton, Green Island, Snug Harbor, Shelter Cove, Bayshore, North Dover, Cranmoore and Gilford Park are just a few. The Toms River Beaches North and South are located on the Barnegat peninsula / Northern Barrier Island consisting of Ortley Beach, Normandy Beach, Normandy Shores, Monterey Beach, Ocean Beaches 1,2 & 3, Chadwick Beach, Chadwick Island, Seacrest Beach, and Silver Beach. Adult communities make up a portion of the Toms River community as well.  A few choices consist of Greenbriar Woodlands, Lake Ridge, Holiday City Silverton and The Gardens of Pleasant Plains. All are easily accessible to major roadways.

 In the western portion of Toms River retirees are offered a combination of Active Adult Community associations in The Holiday City Area these communities are made up of more than 15,000 homes. These communities are accessed from Route 37 West in Toms River but are actually located in the Township of Berkeley. Parks and recreation are abundant throughout the township with 2 County parks as  well as 6 others strategically located throughout various neighborhoods.  Along with offering a municipally owned 18-hole golf course, The Toms River Country Club offers its members golf, swimming, and dining facilities. The YMCA is available to men, woman and children of ages providing an Olympic sized swimming pool as well as year round programs for all. Toms River also has one of the oldest indoor and outdoor ice skating rinks in New Jersey, as well as being home to Toms River Yacht Club which has the distinction of being one of the oldest Yacht Clubs in the nation. The Poland Springs Arena built in 2003 is a 19,939 sq. ft. 3,208-seat multi-purpose arena it hosts various local concerts and sporting events as well as being used for various school basketball games throughout the season. Toms River is also lucky enough to have the only Indoor Athletic Complex Bubble in Ocean County.

 

The Atlantic Ocean, The Barnegat Bay, The Toms River, Silver Bay and The Kettle Creek offer enjoyable sea and shore recreation to all its residents and visitors alike, boating, fishing, swimming, surfing, para-sailing, jet skiing, and riverboat cruises which are easily found throughout the Toms River township. Community Medical Center is a 592-bed, fully accredited acute care hospital, offering world-class medical treatment with the comforts of hometown care. Opened in 1961, CMC has evolved into the largest non-teaching hospital in New Jersey. It has 600 physicians on its medical staff and more than 2,000 associates. The medical Center is Ocean County's largest and most active health-care facility. 

 

TomsRiver has the largest suburban school district in New Jersey with approximately 20,000 students in 18 district schools. Toms River schools service neighboring townships of Beachwood, Pine Beach and South Toms River. The district is made up of 12 elementary schools, 3 intermediate schools and 3 high schools. In addition St Joseph’s grammar school and Monsignor Donovan High school are catholic schools in town. Ocean County College is a two year college with four year options through Kean University; it offers credit and non-credit courses, a full spectrum of learning opportunities and is home to The Robert J Novins Planetarium. Its main campus sits on 275 picturesque acres which is located just south of the Silverton section of Toms River on Hooper Ave.

 

Only 90 miles from Manhattan and 55 miles to Philadelphia, Toms River has several major intersecting roadways, making it easily accessible for commuters to various parts of the state. Major roadways include the Garden State Parkway, U.S. Route 9, Route 35, Route 37, Route 70, Route 166, County Route 527, County Route 530, County Route 549 and County Route 571. The main bus station in Toms River is located in the historic downtown district off exit 81 of the Garden State Parkway. The township is served by New Jersey Transit with various bus routes to Newark, Journal Square in Jersey City, Port Authority in NYC, and Atlantic City as well local travel through various other Ocean County communities. The Central Railroad of New Jersey and Pennsylvania Railroad ended service to the township in the late 1940s. The nearest rail station is the terminus of the North Jersey Coast Line and is located in Bay Head or Point Pleasant Beach. Service is currently being evaluated to nearby Lakehurst on the proposed Monmouth-Ocean-Middlesex Line.
